Abstract

Literature data on the uranium-zinc system have been reviewed and combined with new data to establish the phase relations and thermodynamic properties. The existence of two compounds, U 2Zn 17 and UZn 12, has been firmly established. The first compound undergoes a transformation at 724 ±3 ° C on the uranium-rich side of the compound, at 824 ± 10 ° C on the zincrich side and melts congruently at 970 ± 5 ° C. UZn 12 has a defect structure with a stoichiometry which ranges from UZn 9.4 to UZn 11.5. It undergoes a peritectic reaction at 768 ± 10 ° C. Other features of the phase relations are as originally reported. The standard free energies of formation (in calories) of the compounds are given by the relations ΔG° ( UZn 8.5) = −46,530 + 30.87 T (420 – 668 ° C) ΔG° ( UZn 8.5) = −47,200 + 31.58 T (668 – 724 ° C) ΔG° ( UZn 8.5) = −45,395 + 29.78 T (744 – 775 ° C) ΔG° ( UZn 8.5) = −46,530 + 30.87 T (775 – 970 ° C) ΔG° ( UZn 12) = −52,750 + 36.73 T (420 – 668 ° C) ΔG° ( UZn 12) = −53,415 + 37.44 T (668 – 775 ° C)
