Abstract

ObjectiveTo evaluate via a survey second-year Doctor of Pharmacy Students’ (P2) attitudes and perceptions of the impact of Facebook-delivered health care news. MethodsTwo cohorts of students were surveyed to evaluate the use and comfort level of social media prior to the project. Students’ perceptions regarding the Facebook page including interesting topics, news story sources, plans for future use, and value of assignment to professional development was also determined. ResultsOver two years, 551 students completed the survey. During the project, the students were most interested in posts about newly approved drugs/indications/dosing changes, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalls, and diet/nutrition. The majority planned to continue following the page after project completion, with half planning to contribute to discussions. Students agreed the project helped them stay current on professional news connecting the class to their professional world. ConclusionsThis project exposed students to educational application of Facebook and encouraged them to explore and engage with social media as a way to facilitate their early professional development.
