Abstract

1. 1. The pO 2 of arterial and venous blood fell progressively until breathing was established. During hatching the pO 2 of arterial rose from 20 mm Hg to 110 mm Hg. 2. 2. The pO 2 of arterial blood rose to a maximum of 58 mm Hg by the eighteenth day of incubation. 3. 3. The packed cell volume rose during development but fell significantly after hatching. Little change in the mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration was noted. 4. 4. The efficacy of the chorio-allantois as a site for gaseous exchange is discussed and the importance of a high pCO 2 and low pO 2 in simulating pulmonary respiration is considered.
