Abstract
It is good to have more of the work of Peter of John Olivi in print because of the importance and interest of the author himself, but also because his commentaries were produced at a time when exegesis was done alongside a ‘standard commentary’, the Glossa Ordinaria and its thirteenth-century enlargements. A commentator who departs from routine expectations is therefore posing something of a challenge to his listeners and readers. Peter of John Olivi produced this commentary in the early 1280s, with an emphasis, the editor suggests, not on making a contribution to systematic theology, but on the need to study the Bible as a manual of advice for responding to events and living the Christian life now. The introductory material has an unusual but convincing approach to establishing the ratio editionis and there is a comprehensive series of indexes, including one to verba inusitata.
