Abstract

Some years ago, when the then prime minister qualified for her bus pass, someone in the BBC decided to do a Sunday morning radio programme about the life of older people. As one with some specialist knowledge, I was asked to help. And as any nephew might do in the circumstances, I rang my elderly aunt in case she would be interested in listening. Her reply—“I'm sorry, dear, but we're actually going out hill walking that day”—made quite an important point about the life of older people.
