Abstract
A novel method to solve the Boltzmann-Nordheim-Vlasov equation, based on the concept of mean free path, is applied to subthreshold pion production. The main ingredient of the calculation is the elementary differential production probability which is suitably parametrized to fit existing experimental data. The calculations give a slope in reasonable agreement with the data. A mean free path of ∼5 fm for pions in nuclear matter is deduced.
