Abstract
It was hypothesized that greater spatial distances would be used under the stress of talking about a difficult topic and by introverted and deviant Ss. In Study 1, 52 women completed an introversion-extraversion scale and half were assigned an easy or difficult topic to discuss with another student (an accomplice). In Study 2, 96 women completed four measures of deviancy and interacted with a student (accomplice) under nonstress and then under stress conditions. Difficult conversation topics did not lead to greater distances and, in contrast with previous research, introversion and deviancy did not correlate significantly with individual distance. Implications for the study of personal space are discussed.
