Abstract
This chapter begins, refines, and/or strengthens one’s commitment to a leadership journey and public health, starting with the most important component—oneself! As such, it focuses on critical personal leadership characteristics and practices to assist one on this journey. It is a journey that moves one beyond public health subject matter expert to public health leader. The chapter helps the reader to define personal leadership and the role it plays in systems change, and to identify critical evidence-based practices to develop oneself as a leader. It presents exercises to grow one’s leadership capacity, and reflect on the strengths and gaps in one’s leadership development. Every leadership opportunity that one chooses to forego is a missed opportunity to be part of something important and vital. By refining and/or strengthening one’s commitment to one’s personal leadership journey, one can move beyond public health subject matter expert to public health leader.
