Abstract

Although research has been conducted on the relation between personal characteristics (ie, demographics, socioeconomic status, health practices, and access to care) and health status,1-15 few studies have examined the joint impact of these individual characteristics on personal health status. The assessment of the association between a particular individual characteristic and health status is incomplete without simultaneously controlling for the influence of other characteristics known to influence health status. Further, researchers tend to focus on measures of general health status such as respondents' self-perceived health in general, rather than on other dimensions of health such as mental and physical wellbeing.
