Abstract
Historry education dates as early as the arrival of Islam to the Malay world. Ever since, the society of this region has been exposed to the Islamic historical teachings contained in the Quran and other written manuscripts. In a broader sense, this article discusses development of history education in Malaysia from the beginning of the Malaccan era in the 15th century. More specifically, the discussion looks into the history education of the 20th century when vast changes were implemented in the Malay education policy. At this time, history was not considered essential simply because the British feared it would end up jeopardizing their hold over the Malay states. The changes made in national education policy during the post-independence era are also discussed. History subject that is tailored for the locals was established with the goal of uniting the people as well as injecting patriotism toward the country.
