Abstract
Periodical nitrogen fixation experiments with two strains ofAzotobacter chroococcum for 16 months showed no definite correlation between gains of nitrogen and meteorological changes, as reported by Bortels. Variability in the gains of nitrogen seemed to be due largely to chance variation, together with certain abnormal depressions which did not clearly coincide with changes in atmospheric pressure. The conclusions of Bortels thus do not seem to be generally valid forAzotobacter. Certain long-term variations in nitrogen fixation seemed in one strain to be connected with the arising of a variant of lower nitrogen-fixing power.
