Performance interference of co-allocated applications in cloud computing: A systematic literature review

Cloud computing applications (CCA) are defined by their elasticity, on-demand provisioning and ability to address, cost-effectively, volatile workloads. These new cloud computing (CC) applications are being increasingly deployed by organizations but without a means of managing their performance proactively. While CCA provide advantages and disadvantages over traditional client-server applications, their unreliable application performance due to the intricacy and the high number of multi connected moving parts of its underlying infrastructure, has become a major challenge for software engineers and system administrators. For example, capturing how the end-users perceive the application performance as they complete their daily tasks has not been addressed satisfactorily. One possible approach for identifying the most relevant performance measures for Root Cause Analysis (RCA) of performance degradation events on CCA, from an end-user perspective, is to leverage the information captured in performance logs, a source of data that is widely available in today’s datacenters, and where detailed records of resource consumption and performance logs is captured from numerous systems, servers and network components used by the CCA. This paper builds on a model proposed for measuring CC application performance and extends it with the addition of the end-user perspective, exploring how it can be used in identifying root causes (RC) for performance degradation events in a large-scale industrial scenario. The experimentation required adjustments to the original proposal in order to determine, with the help of a multivariate statistical technique, the performance of a CCA from the perspective of an end-user. An experiment with a corporate email CCA is also presented and illustrates how the performance model can identify most relevant performance measures and help predict future performance issues.

Enterprises seek for possibilities to limit the costs and for areas that stimulate the level of innovation. Both of these aspects can be effectively supported by application of cloud computing, without a simultaneous need to make a choice of a trade-off type. The aim of the article is to prove that cloud computing provides entrepreneurs with the possibility to limit the costs and at the same time to support their activities related to the selected direction of innovation development. It has both a direct influence on the level and structure of costs in the enterprise, as well as an indirect influence, e.g. related to shortening the time for introduction of new solutions to the market, making decisions or limiting the costs of projects.

In order to meet the special and multiple requirements of Military Intelligence Fusion (MIF), Cloud Computing idea is used in this paper. This paper researches the application method of the Cloud Computing in MIF. By analyzing the specifically demands of MIF and combining the characteristics of Cloud Computing, this paper takes out the advantages of Cloud Computing applied to MIF in the share of data and application, combining the intelligence resource, massive data storage and management, processing the massive intelligence information, deploying and maintaining the intelligence system software, providing security. Then the paper educes the sense of the application of Cloud Computing in MIF. The paper brings forward the construction assumption of MIF system in four levels construction realization model, encapsulating the existing military intelligence resource, establishing the intelligence fusion application and data centre (IFADC), establishing access platform based on Cloud Computing. At last this paper supplies references to the application of Cloud Computing in data fusion.

A comprehensive overview of Identity-Based Encryption (IBE) and its applications in cloud computing has been provided in this study. It covers the basic concept of IBE and its advantages over traditional public-key cryptography. Additionally, how IBE is used to secure data in cloud computing and its benefits, such as improved privacy and security are explained. The security issues in cloud computing, including data privacy and confidentiality, data security, compliance, malicious insiders, lack of control, and interception and eavesdropping, are highlighted. It is important to note that IBE can enhance data security in cloud computing. This study is a helpful tool for those interested in learning about Identity-Based Encryption and its applications in cloud computing.

With the rapid increase in global intellectual production, academic libraries have been challenged to make this product available to beneficiaries at the perfect time and place. On the other hand, the rapid development in the field of information technology, especially cloud computing and open source software applications, offers many capabilities that can be harnessed in the work of academic libraries to meet the needs of beneficiaries. This paper aims to developing information services in the academic libraries in University of Diyala (UOD) through using cloud computing applications and open source software (Koha) to facilitate the search and retrieval of information by librarians and beneficiaries. A unified research platform has been created for all academic libraries at UOD using Koha integrated system and building a database of bibliographic records, which have been installed on the Google cloud platform. The unified search platform helps librarians and users retrieve information and search resources more efficiently from anywhere, at anytime by calling sources of information with multiple retrieval points (author, source, ISBN, abstract, keywords) as well as the ability to search for sources of information in all UOD libraries simultaneously, which contributes to reducing the time of the beneficiary in obtaining sources of information.

Cloud computing, a kind of web service provisioning model, provides immense benefits over traditional IT service environments with the help of virtualization technology. As cloud computing is not a fully matured paradigm, it poses many open issues to be addressed. The key research problem in cloud computing is efficient resource provisioning which is due to its complex and distributed architecture. Graph-based representations of complex networks provide simpler views and graph theoretical techniques provide simpler solutions for lot of issues inherent in networks. Hence, this paper begins with exploration of graph theory applications in computer networks with specific focus on graph theory applications in cloud computing. This work pays attention to basic resource provisioning problems arise in cloud computing environments and presents some conceptual graph theoretical suggestions to address these issues.

An I/O intensive application is one of the most common applications in cloud computing, which is a dominant type in some occasions. However, few studies have focused on how to improve the processing efficiency of such specific type of applications. We have found out the performance bottlenecks based on the features obtained from I/O-intensive applications. By analyzing the features of files, we put forward a packagebased strategy. It means all small sized files are packaged before the specific I/O operations by using this kind of applications. This can remarkably shorten the time of addressing files and fully use of the I/O resources. To verify the strategy, we have done extensive experiments. The experimental results show the packaging strategy can efficiently improve the processing efficiency of I/O-intensive applications in cloud computing, which can be beneficial for increasing the resource efficiency of cloud data centers.

Dynamic resource provisioning is a challenging technique to meet the service level agreement (SLA) requirements of multi-tier applications in virtualization-based cloud computing. Prior efforts have addressed this challenge based on either a cost-oblivious approach or a cost-aware approach. However, both approaches may suffer frequent SLA violations under flash crowd conditions. Because they ignore the benefit gained that a multi-tier application continuously guarantees the SLA in the new configuration. In this paper, we propose a benefit-aware approach with feedback control theory to solve this problem. Experimental results based on live workload traces show that our approach can reduce resource provisioning cost by as much as 30% compared with a costoblivious approach, and can effectively reduce SLA violations compared with a cost-aware approach.

Cloud and Edge Computing are currently undergoing a sub-stantive transformation on several fronts, from applications to hardware, and from architectures to devices. This issue of the Cloud and Edge Computing Series solicited articles in the area of Cloud and Edge Computing to address the main issues concerned with evolving processes, supporting pedagogies, and applications in cloud computing, networking, and storages technologies. There have been advances on both the cloud and edge computing fronts that have affected this line of technology. Paradigms, such as computing in virtualization-based architectures, issues on geo-graphical constraints for deploying clouds, and the use of SDN/NFV in clouds, for example, were of special interest for this issue of the Series. Nevertheless, our attention was also focused on data center network (DCN) architectures, security, load balancing, and application data streaming supported by evidence from simulations, analysis, or experiments. Cloud and Edge Computing are also incorporated with the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. IoT requiring multiple access edge computing systems is gaining momentum and considered to be deployed in smart cities, public safety, and e-health. The last, but not least important, factor we expected to see in articles was the standardization aspects of Cloud and Edge Computing technology. We were especially interested in articles that could address communications standards in networking for clouds, fogs, and edge computing.
