Abstract

In this paper, we evaluate the performance of adaptive algorithms for selecting the number of redundant packets by jointly considering the forward error correction (FEC) and automatic repeat request (ARQ) mechanisms under Gilbert-Elliot (GE) wireless channel. Joint FEC and ARQ mechanisms are applied to video streaming for recovering the transmission errors. It is shown that the proposed heuristic algorithms achieve an improvement in the error recovery process under long burst of errors and in situations where error probability is high. System efficiency and gains in peak-signal-to- noise-ratio (PSNR) are compared, using NS2 based simulations. It is found that the proposed adaptive heuristic algorithms outperform other existing adaptive schemes in terms of system efficiency and PSNR gains. The results show that the proposed algorithms can perform well in wireless channels where long bursts of errors are common phenomena.
