Abstract

In this paper, we investigate the impact of channel estimation error on the average symbol error rate (SER) of orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) in MIMO Rayleigh fading channels. Exact closed-form expressions of SER for general rectangular quardrature amplitude modulation (QAM) schemes with M-ary signaling are derived. Using an accurate exponential bound for the Gaussian Q-function, we also present a simple approximate solution for the average SER of general rectangular QAM, when these modulation schemes are used along with OSTBC in MIMO Rayleigh fading channels with channel estimation error. The approximate solution can be used to compute the average SER of general rectangular QAM in such fading channels. Numerical results are presented to verify the accuracy of the solution.
