Abstract

We analyze a sleep mode operation in IEEE 802.16m mobile WiMAX. We construct a 3-dimensional embedded Markov chain for the sleep mode with both uplink and downlink Poisson packet arrivals. We obtain the average power consumption and the average packet delay. The analytical results match with simulations very well. Performance evaluations show that there is a trade-off between the power consumption and the downlink packet delay. We also see that a presence of uplink packet improves the performance on the downlink packet delay, but increases the power consumption.
