Perfectionism and relationship quality in parent-adolescent dyads
Perfectionism can be both a result of difficulties in the parent–adolescent relationships and a source of interpersonal problems according to the Perfectionism Social Disconnection Model. Applying this in the family context, the present study investigates the longitudinal interplay between relationship quality and perfectionism characteristics in parent-adolescent dyads. The study examined a sample ( N = 443) of adolescents (m age at Time 1 = 15.6 years old, 69.3% cisgender women) and their parents (m age at Time 1 = 43.8 years, 84.3% cisgender women) using an actor-partner model in a cross-lagged longitudinal design with three waves. Results showed that adolescents’ perceptions of relationship quality with their mother predicted significant relative changes in adolescents’ perfectionistic concerns. Furthermore, adolescents’ perceptions of relationship quality with both their parents predicted changes in parental perfectionistic strivings. However, parental perfectionistic strivings predicted decreases only in adolescents’ perceptions of relationship quality with their father. These results underscore the critical role of adolescents’ views on the parent-child relationship in shaping both their own and their parents’ perfectionism, as well as potential differences between mother and father relationship quality dynamics with perfectionism.

Food insecurity, identified as a critical stressor for many families, can directly and indirectly influence children's development through interparental relationships and parenting. This study examines how food insecurity relates to children's problem behaviors and the mediating roles of interparental relationship quality and parenting stress. It also investigates the association between parents' perception of relationship quality and both their own and their partner's parenting stress. The study included 2095 children from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study. The actor partner interdependence model was used to explore the actor and partner influence of relationship quality on parents' parenting stress. To examine the association pathways from food insecurity to children's problem behaviors, a structural equation model was conducted. Results suggest that fathers' perception of couple relationship quality predicted both their own and their partner's parenting stress while mothers' perception of couple relationship quality only predicted their own, but not fathers', parenting stress. In the positive association between food insecurity and children's problem behaviors, there was a serial mediation through mothers' perception of relationship quality and mothers' parenting stress. In addition, food insecurity was negatively correlated with mothers' perception of relationship quality, but not with that of fathers. This study highlights the pathway from food insecurity to children's problem behaviors through mothers' perceptions of interparental relationship quality and parenting stress. Results provide support for the family stress theory and offer valuable insights for the formulation of potential prevention and intervention programs.

This study employed a dyadic data analysis approach to examine the association between partners' empathy and relationship quality among cohabitating couples. Data were collected from 374 cohabitating but non-married couples, who were participants in the Wave 3 Romantic Pairs Subsample of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Men's higher empathy was related to their own perceptions of better relationship quality and women's higher empathy was related to their own as well as their partner's perceptions of better relationship quality. These findings show that individuals' abilities to be understanding, compassionate, and sympathetic may be related to the overall feeling of satisfaction and love in romantic relationships. The only effect that did not reach statistical significance was the partner effect from men's empathy to women's relationship quality. Although previous research with married couples has shown that men's empathy may play a more important role in shaping couples' perceptions of relationship quality, according to the current findings, these findings may not extend to cohabitating couples. The current results provide beneficial guidance to clinicians working with distressed, non-married couples.

The present study examined the influence of personality traits on the quality of the Chinese coach-athlete relationship and satisfaction through a dyadic research design. A total of 350 coach-athlete dyads completed a self-report instrument that assessed personality traits, as well as perceptions of relationship quality and satisfaction with training. Results revealed that: (a) actor effects (i.e., actor's personality will predict his or her own perceptions of relationship quality) of personality traits, namely, conscientiousness, extroversion, and neuroticism, on both coaches' and athletes' perceptions of relationship quality and (b) partner effects (an actor's own personality will predict his or her partner's perceptions of relationship quality) of only athletes' personality, namely, conscientiousness, extroversion, and neuroticism, on their coaches' perceptions of relationship quality. The findings suggested that each relationship member's personality trait contributed independently to relationship quality, and both actor and partner effects of the relationship quality on satisfaction with training were found to be significant. In Chinese sports culture, there presents a unique dynamics of personality and relationship quality among coach-athlete dyad.

The aim of the current study was to examine actor and partner effects of (a) athletes' and coaches' attachment styles (avoidant and anxious) on the quality of the coach-athlete relationship, and (b) athletes' and coaches' quality of the coach-athlete relationship on relationship satisfaction employing the actor-partner interdependence model (Kenny, Kashy, & Cook, 2006). Coaches (N = 107) and athletes (N = 107) completed a questionnaire related to attachment styles, relationship quality, and relationship satisfaction. Structural equation model analyses revealed (a) actor effects for coaches' and athletes' avoidant attachment styles on their own perception of relationship quality and coaches' and athletes' perception of relationship quality on their own perception of relationship satisfaction, and (b) partner effects for athletes' avoidant attachment style on coaches' perceptions of relationship quality and for coaches' perceptions of relationship quality on athletes' perceptions of relationship satisfaction. The findings highlight that attachments styles can help us understand the processes involved in the formation and maintenance of quality relational bonds between coaches and athletes.

In Italy the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown have deeply changed the way Italian people used to live. Many emerging adults had to self-distance from their romantic partners and modify the way of communicating and relating to each other. Thus managing a romantic relationship could be very challenging. The study quantitatively and qualitatively investigates the association between Lockdown related negative emotions, perception of the romantic relationship quality, changes in the relationship's characteristics and conflict within the couple. The sample consists of 171 emerging adults involved in a romantic relationship, who spent the time of lockdown apart from the romantic partner. Results showed that the perception of the relationship quality was not greatly associated with Lockdown related negative emotions, but was associated with changes and higher conflict within the relationship. Qualitative data support and enrich these results. Changes and conflicts within the relationship were due to: difficulties to communicate, lack of intimacy, awareness about relationship importance or presence of emotionaldetachment between partners.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the measures taken to mitigate its devastating effects posed unparalleled challenges to romantic relationships. National lockdowns forcing couples to spend long hours in closed quarters were especially straining, yet evidence points to considerable variability in the effect of the pandemic on relationship quality. Drawing on socioemotional selectivity theory, we examined age differences in perceptions of romantic relationship quality as one source of insight into this variability. During the first lockdown in Israel, 280 adults aged 25-81 reported positive and negative qualities of their romantic relationships. Of these, 105 participants completed the survey again once lockdown restrictions were lifted. Contrary to our hypotheses based on socioemotional selectivity theory, we found no evidence for age differences in the effect of the lockdown on perceptions of relationship quality. In addition, the lockdown did not influence participants’ positive and negative perceptions of their romantic partners. However, we found that whereas people of all ages represent positive and negative qualities of their romantic partners as separate constructs, the negative association between the two is weaker for older adults compared to younger adults during (but not after) the lockdown. This finding suggests that in stressful times, older adults are better able to avoid negative perceptions clouding positive perceptions and see positive aspects of relationships with romantic partners in the face of negative ones. Findings extend evidence for age associations with complex emotional experiences to emotional aspects of interpersonal relationships and may inform potential interventions for improving romantic relationships during stressful times.

SUMMARY Using data from both partners in female same-sex couples, individual and dyadic (individual/actor-partner) level analyses were conducted to determine the associations between couple members' global mental health, internalized homophobia, and perceptions of relationship qualities and satisfaction (N = 90). Findings at the dyadic level indicated that an individual's global mental health was uniquely associated with her partner's assessment of relationship satisfaction and qualities, beyond the effects of the individual's own mental health and internalized homophobia. Implications for further research on the strengths and challenges within female same-sex couple relationships are discussed.

This study explores the multiple organizational relationships between frontline miners, managers, and supervisors to reveal the human organizational risks of coal mine safety and health management. Data were collected from six high‐risk rock burst underground mining companies operating in western, central, north‐eastern, and south‐eastern regions of China. A total of 1105 respondents from the three core groups were investigated. Descriptive statistics and paired test methods were used to empirically analyze the deteriorated and dislocated relationships between multiple roles. The specific conclusions are as follows: (1) Miners’ perception of relationship quality is the lowest, and the managers’ perception of relationship quality is the highest. (2) “Closeness” relationship is expressed among peer colleagues for all multiple roles. (3) The deteriorated relation rate of miners averagely reached 19.67%, and that of supervisors averagely reached 17.63%, thereby mostly reaching 27.8% for miners with regard to supervisors. (4) The workers in high positions easily have a phenomenon of “overestimated confidence” in the perception of dislocated relationships, and the “miners‐supervisors” and “supervisors‐manager” dual‐core contradiction have obviously been emerging. (5) The valuable, harmonious, and extent degree are relatively lowest in all relationship items.

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of interdependence on anxiety within dyads where one person was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Perceptions of relationship quality were expected to mitigate the anxiety experienced by both members of the dyad. 96 dyads participated in a 3-wave longitudinal study that took place over 10 weeks. Dyads were composed of a woman with stage I-III breast cancer who was currently undergoing treatment, and a partner who she nominated to participate in the study along with her. Results indicated that anxiety felt by women with breast cancer was consistently associated with that of her partner. Structural equation analyses suggest that the within-dyad influence runs mostly from partners' anxiety to the anxiety of women with breast cancer. Partners' anxiety was also associated with other indicators of the women's well being including depression, fatigue, and symptom management. Perceptions of relationship quality from women with breast cancer and their partners were negatively associated with partners' anxiety. However, women's anxiety was only correlated with their partners', but not their own, perceptions of relationship quality. These findings underscore the benefit of having partners who are able to cope with or get help for their own personal distress as women cope with the stress of breast cancer and its treatment.

This study examined the relationship of relationship quality and partner's drug use on treatment outcomes for women in outpatient drug treatment. The sample consisted of predominately heterosexual couples where the female partner was in drug treatment. Both the partners' perception of relationship quality and the interaction of female client and her partner's perception of relationship quality were significant predictors of one of the outcome variables-the client's posttest report of days of drug use during the previous 30 days. Interestingly, clients reported more days of drug use when their partners reported higher relationship quality. A similar pattern was found with the ASI Drug composite score as the dependent variable except that the interaction term was not significant in that analysis. In addition, partners' relationship quality scores were associated with female clients' treatment completion. A higher proportion of women whose partners reported higher relationship quality failed to complete treatment. Partners' reports of pretest and posttest drug use were not related to women's treatment outcomes.

Relationship marketing strategies have long been known to affect salespeople and the customers they serve. However, there is still much to learn about the mechanisms that drive such buyer-seller relationships. This research examines how a salesperson’s behavior, relational orientation, and individual disposition dynamically interact to influence customers in the business to business marketing environment. Data collected from the customers’ point of view reveal several unique salesperson competencies and strategies that affect the buyer-seller relationship. The final dataset (n = 206) included customers’ observations about their salesperson and perceptions of relationship quality. The key findings suggest that the perceived quality of buyer and seller relationships is highly dependent on selling strategies, behaviors, and relational factors enacted by salespeople. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling was used to uncover correlations between selling strategies and critical dimensions of the customer-seller relationship. Final results indicate that selling strategies enacted by salespeople affect critical dimensions of the buyer-seller relationship. Furthermore, the effects of customers’ perceptions of relationship quality were found to correlate strongly with salesperson performance outcomes. Managerial implications of this research are far-reaching as the results provide direction for sales organizations in the way of both training and management. The impact on overall selling performance is discussed and future research directions are examined.

Relationship quality is important as it is a strong indicator of long-term relationships (Bejou, Wray and Ingram 1996; Crosby, Evans and Cowles 1990), and an important driver for loyalty and profitability (Athanasopoulou 2009). Customer’s perceptions of the quality of the relationship they have with their service providers are built over time. Yet, researches often examine customer’s perceptions of relationship quality statically. This prevents the meaningful understanding of how customers form their perceptions of relationship quality and subsequent outcomes. Prior research has revealed little about the variation in the salience of service quality – technical and functional quality, relationship management and relational switching costs between novice and experienced customers in terms of contribution to relationship quality perceptions and subsequent loyalty. This study examines these issues using AMOS multi-group analyses across experiential services such as a travel agency, hairdressing salon, general banking and airline services. Results indicate that technical and functional quality and switching costs differs across novice and experienced customer groups. Specifically, the impact of technical quality on relationship quality perceptions was significantly more in the experienced group and the impact of functional quality and switching costs was found to be a significant driver of relationship quality for the experienced group only. The impact of relationship management on relationship quality and the effect of relationship quality on loyalty are both significant and were found to be relatively consistent across both groups. These findings have implications for managing relationship quality perceptions, improving service provider performance and enhancing customer relations.
