Software process modeling has undergone extensive changes in the last three decades, impacting process' structure, degree of control, degree of visualization, degree of automation and integration. These changes can be attributed to several factors. This paper studies two of these factors, the time dimension and the interdisciplinary impact, and assesses their effect on the evolution of process modeling. A literature survey for software process modeling was carried out which provided evidence of how the time dimension and the interdisciplinary impact triggered process evolution and changes in methodology, technology experience and business requirements. Finally, the paper concludes with a theoretical framework to serve as an illustrative model for the effects of the time dimension and interdisciplinary impact on process modeling evolution. This framework can serve as to develop more advanced models for technological forecasting in software process modeling evolution.

In South Africa, the integration of community engagement into research and teaching roles is mandated through policy guidelines, which created the need for transformation of Higher Education (HE) since the late 1990s. One approach that allows such integration is service-learning and this approach is the focus of a research study conducted with field supervisors to determine the level of reciprocal engagement experienced by them. Communication plays a strong role in authentic university-community partnerships (UCPs) and Monash South Africa is cognisant of the challenges encountered with regard to diversity during placements or internships, some of which were discovered through the study. The ultimate aim of the chapter is to offer some recommendations for having a student-engaged and community-focused curriculum with reflections on its internationality and inter-disciplinary impact.

This introductory chapter presents an overview of the defining characteristics and distinguishing features of educational semiotics. The chapter traces some marks in the history of edusemiotics as a novel branch in philosophy of education that, albeit so far very briefly, has already had an interdisciplinary impact and inspired the research strands highlighted in this handbook. As a new theoretical foundation, edusemiotics also represents a conceptual shift from the mainly psychological research that characterizes the applied field known as semiotics in education. Edusemiotics is an integrative conceptual framework that aims to overcome the persistent legacy of Cartesian dualism both in theory and in practice. Edusemiotics centers on learning experiences comprising a process of growth and evolution of signs in which both teachers and students can find significance and meaning. While focusing on the signs of experience, edusemiotics has strong onto/logical presuppositions that affect our conceptions of what constitutes this very experience, subjectivity, and reason; thus having important implications for pedagogy and policy.

Given the significance of human resources and people management in the current dynamic environment, this article systematically identifies, synthesizes and analyses the research published on various themes and trends in people-centric human resource management (HRM). The systematic literature review method proposed by Denyer and Tranfield (2009) has been adopted for this study. The 227 studies have been categorized according to themes and analysed to understand research trends, consequences, limitations and potential future research areas. The analysis of the literature reveals that HRM has become more strategic than transactional in its research. Researchers are concentrating on analysing and improving human resource methods, which have an interdisciplinary impact. The focus is more on people-oriented HRM like ‘employee well-being’, ‘employee voice’, ‘work–family balance,’ etc., suggesting that organizations consider people as a source of competitive advantage. The findings also present a clear route for future research in this domain. The major contribution of this article is in identifying holistic views of themes, variables and theories paramount to people-centric HRM research. Insights identified in this study would enable future researchers to design their conceptual and empirical studies on emerging and relevant topics.

DNA, the fundamental carrier of genetic information, has evolved beyond its biological function to serve as a versatile and programmable material for constructing nanoscale architecture. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the chemical and enzymatic strategies that enable the synthesis, ligation, and assembly of DNA nanostructures, highlighting their interdisciplinary impact. We first examine key chemical approaches, including oligo synthesis and DNA origami, which offer precise control over base sequence and structural complexity. We then explore enzymatic methods-such as ligation and amplification techniques-that facilitate high-fidelity and scalable construction of intricate nanostructures. Subsequently, we investigate how these strategies are applied to create DNA-based materials such as chips, hydrogels, and reconfigurable architectures for in vitro biosensing and other biomedical applications. The review further delves into enzymatic assembly in vivo, including drug delivery, bioimaging, molecular machines, and therapeutic interventions. Finally, we highlight emerging frontiers of DNA nanotechnology, particularly its integration into nanoelectronics and its transformative potential as a medium for digital data storage. By addressing recent advances, current challenges, and future perspectives, this review underscores the pivotal role of chemical and enzymatic techniques in advancing DNA nanotechnology as a foundational platform for next-generation biomedical, materials, and information technologies.

Our analysis explores the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) in music generation, showcasing progress in electronic music, automatic music generation, evolution in music, contributions to music-related disciplines, specific studies, contributions to the renewal of western music, and hardware development and educational applications. The identified methods encompass neural networks, automation and simulation, neuroscience techniques, optimization algorithms, data analysis, and Bayesian models, computational algorithms, and music processing and audio analysis. These approaches signify the complexity and versatility of AI in music creation. The interdisciplinary impact is evident, extending into sound engineering, music therapy, and cognitive neuroscience. Robust frameworks for evaluation include Bayesian models, fractal metrics, and the statistical creator-evaluator. The global reach of this research underscores AI's transformative role in contemporary music, opening avenues for future interdisciplinary exploration and algorithmic enhancements.

Buprenorphine has not only had an interdisciplinary impact on our understanding of key neuroscience topics like opioid pharmacology, pain signaling, and reward processing but has also been a key influence in changing the way that substance use disorders are approached in modern medical systems. From its leading role in expanding outpatient treatment of opioid use disorders to its continued influence on research into next-generation analgesics, buprenorphine has been a continuous player in the ever-evolving societal perception of opioids and substance use disorder. To provide a multifaceted account on the enormous diversity of areas where this molecule has made an impact, this article discusses buprenorphine's chemical properties, synthesis and development, pharmacology, adverse effects, manufacturing information, and historical place in the field of chemical neuroscience.

The point of this paper is to foster an awareness of the varied uses to which scholars are putting the term ‘ecocriticism’ in varied perspectives today. Thoreau’s Walden is such indisputable literary monument on environmental literature to explore, upkeep and strengthen interest in establishing pragmatic relationship between the human and natural worlds. Thoreau lived simply without “modern improvements” which he called “improved means to unimproved ends.” This displays how one places oneself in the nature world, understands nature, and the environmental aspects to cast-off materialism. Thoreau rejects what is profane and superficial but pleads nature as the storehouse of sincerity and impartiality. He proves that society creates loneliness and fear, which can be dispelled by content with Nature. A man is never alone if he is aware of his non-human relationships. The paper perhaps is a seminal attempt to make some evolution toward fostering and legitimizing the sweats of ecocritics in ecocriticism (across) milieu. It sufficiently accounts for the personal connection and sense of responsibility towards self, society, literary studies and nature. Thoreau’s Walden elevates the concept of ecocriticism further to have interdisciplinary impact beyond prejudice to create a ‘universal discipline’ to discuss, innovate and create healthy literature-environment anthology to live in for progenies. This convinces intellectuals to pursue an interest in ecology while enduring literary professionals. Thoreau’s belief in nature sets new tenets that address the major ecological concerns to see it ‘greening’ to prevent ‘The Endangered Earth- a virulent veracity’ tomorrow.

Stroke is a leading cause of disability in the world and the use of robots in rehabilitation has become increasingly common. The Fourth Industrial Revolutions has created a novel and wide range of options for the involvement of computer-guided and artificially intelligent machines to be used in rehabilitation. In this chapter we critically review some of the literature on the use of robots in rehabilitation, and emphasize the diversity of approaches in this burgeoning field. We argue that there is a need to consolidate interdisciplinary evidence on robotics and rehabilitation in a systematic way, as the alternative is to have a literature that continues to grow, following the interests of various specialists, but without offering a synoptic assessment of what is available to medical specialists and patients. A literature review using Scopus and Web of Science, coupled with the Briggs Institute's Critical Appraisal Tool: Checklist for Case Reports was conducted. The two databases were systematically searched using inter-disciplinary keywords in Feb 2019. An initial search of the databases produced 9894 articles. After rigorous reviews, 35 articles were screened and selected for further interpretation. We examined the current studies on the efficiency and effectiveness of the robot interventions and produced a taxonomy of the review. An original finding of the current robotics in rehabilitation landscaping are critical presented with recommendations and concluding remarks concerning interdisciplinary impact.

This work examines the life and contributions of Abū Bakr Muhammad ibn Zakariyyā al-Rāzī (865–925 AD), also known as Rhazes, a renowned Persian polymath and physician. Being famous as the father of psychiatry, psychology and pharmacology, Rhazes made significant advancements in medicine, philosophy, ethics and alchemy. His works, including influential treatises and translations of Greek medical texts, laid the groundwork for modern medical practices. As a physician and medical director in Baghdad, his humanitarian efforts were particularly aimed at aiding the poor. This biography examines Rhazes’s achievements, highlighting his interdisciplinary impact on various medical fields and natural sciences. By studying and marvelling at his contributions, we gain valuable insights into the historical evolution of medical knowledge and the foundational concepts that continue to influence contemporary medical practices.

Variation in life history (LH) traits along the fast-slow continuum (referred to as pace of life, POL) is thought to result from a trade-off between investments in current versus future reproduction. Originally developed for understanding variation in LH strategies at the among-population level, the POL theory has more recently been applied towards understanding variation in LH traits at the within-population level, and further extended to address the covariance of LH traits with additional behavioural and/or physiological traits, referred to as pace-of-life syndromes (POLS). The article by Reale et al. (Philos T Roy Soc B 365:4051–4063, 2010), which synthesized several earlier reviews and opinions on among-individual covariation between LH, behavioural, and physiological traits, and subsequent research testing POLS in a variety of species, have collectively been cited several hundreds of times—a trend that continues. These works have interdisciplinary impact, informing research in life history biology, behavioural and developmental biology, and the social sciences. In this paper, we review the existing theoretical POLS models that provide adaptive explanations for covariances between LH traits and additional behavioural and/or physiological traits while assuming a trade-off between current and future reproduction. We find that the set of relevant models is small. Moreover, models show that covariances between life history traits and behavioural or physiological traits can arise even in the absence of a current-future reproduction trade-off, implying that observing such covariances does not provide a strong indication regarding the process generating POLS. We discuss lessons learned from existing models of POLS, highlight key gaps in the modelling literature, and provide guidelines for better integration between theory and data.

This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis aimed at assessing the impact of blockchain technology on transaction security. Spanning the period from 2016 to 2024, our analysis encompasses a total of 980 papers, revealing a profound scholarly interest and a rapidly evolving research landscape in this domain. Through quantitative metrics such as citation analysis, and qualitative insights from thematic, overlay, density, and author network visualizations, we delineate the key trends, challenges, and future directions in blockchain research. The findings indicate a marked emphasis on the decentralization, security, and transparency that blockchain offers, with significant applications across banking, energy trading, the Internet of Things (IoT), healthcare, and education sectors. Despite its promise, the study also identifies persistent challenges related to scalability, interoperability, privacy, and regulatory compliance that need addressing. By mapping the scholarly landscape, this research not only sheds light on the current state of blockchain technology in enhancing transaction security but also outlines potential avenues for future research, underscoring the technology's interdisciplinary impact and its evolving role in digital transactions.
