This study aims to determine the effect of Islamic communication conducted by students on the level of Islamic understanding among the community surrounding Islamic boarding schools. As agents of da'wah, students play a crucial role in conveying Islamic values in a way that is accessible and relevant to the community. This research employs a quantitative associative approach using the survey method. Data were collected from 45 respondents who have been directly exposed to student-led da'wah activities. The validity test confirmed that all questionnaire items were appropriate and valid. Descriptive statistical analysis showed high average scores for both variables: Islamic communication (mean = 39.16; SD = 6.03) and community Islamic understanding (mean = 42.73; SD = 4.90). The Pearson correlation test indicated a strong and significant positive relationship (r = 0.636, p < 0.01) between the two variables. Furthermore, simple linear regression analysis yielded the equation Y = 22.497 + 0.517X with an R² value of 0.404, meaning that 40.4% of the variance in Islamic understanding can be explained by the effectiveness of student communication. These findings highlight the importance of student engagement in grassroots Islamic communication and its measurable impact on public religious understanding

Examining Factors that Influence IIUM Students’ Involvement in Da’wah Activities via Social Media

  • Tengku Siti Aisha Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen + 1 more

The rapid development of new media and communication technology has revolutionised how da’wah is disseminated. Consuming and sharing Islamic content online has become a norm in the contemporary lifestyle of Muslims due to the advancement in social networking and communication technology. However, there are concerns with the credibility, reliability, and accuracy of religious information shared on social media. Communication scholars have long examined social media use among young adults and much of the focus has been on identifying different motives for using social media, and how social media use and intensity predicts motives for using social media. However, not many studies have focused on religious motives in using social media, and how it affects involvement in da’wah activities through social media. The quantitative approach was utilised, using a cross-sectional survey distributed online among IIUM students (N = 275). Overall, as predicted by the uses and gratification theory, social media involvement is positively correlated to motives for using social media. Those who were more involved in using social media were also more likely to engage in da’wah activities via social media. Findings also indicate that students who have more formal exposure to Islam are also more interested in online da’wah activities via social media. Finally, social interaction and informational motives in using social media lead to higher involvement in da’wah activities via social media. Based on the findings, specific suggestions to improve participation in da’wah activities using social media platforms are provided in this study.

One of the important points in the process of da'wah is the content of the message. Namely the teachings contained in the Qur'an, al-Hadith, Ijma 'Ulamak and Qiyas. Meanwhile, the purpose of preaching itself is to make Islamic teachings manifest in every aspect of people's lives, the economic aspects are colored by Islamic teachings, as well as aspects of law, as well as politics and so on. Democracy as a form of government that is carried out by placing the people as holders of sovereignty, requires people who understand this role. There are three roles of the ummah in this case, namely electing a leader or head of government, exercising control over government policies and determining the goals the government must achieve. Therefore, Islamic communication or da'wah activities in this case need to contribute in an effort to educate the people so that they can play these roles. The contribution of da'wah in this case is to provide information about the criteria for a leader who is eligible to be elected, to provide information about policies such as what the government needs to do and the goals or directions that need to be taken.

Community empowerment is part of da’wah activities which are often interpreted as oral activities. Da'wah in the form of community empowerment activities is known as Da'wah billhal. Preaching by action (bilhal) is not only aimed at improving the quality of your faith, but also as an effort to improve the standard of life of the people as mad'u. Women and Da‘wah in the 20th Century: An Analysis of Maryam Jameelah's Contributions
  • Jun 19, 2021
  • Journal of Religious and Social Studies
  • Muhammad Zohaib

Maryam Jameelah was a Jewish-American lady who, after embracing Islam, selected Pakistan as her adopted abode. Mostly her conversion to Islam and fierce criticism of western civilization became the topic of discussion among academics. However, her work for da‘wah, so evident since her childhood, did not find much attention in the literary circles. A study of her life and works can reveal answers to the questions such as how she engaged herself in this field, what is the methodology adopted by her, and how does her work is useful for the women interested in da‘wah. Analyzing her published books and articles along with the unpublished material found in her library, the current paper focuses on the practical aspects of her da‘wah activities. It is argued that being a convert, she was aware of the problems of people who either converted to Islam or had an interest in it. Thus, targeting an English-speaking audience, she did not only write a bulk of literature to disseminate her understanding of Islam in Euro-American communities, but also practically contributed to this field through her discussions with non-Muslims, correspondence, and economic support for Islamic organizations.
