The purpose of this study is to analyze how inflation, the Human Development Index (HDI), and government spending affect economic growth in Palopo City. This study employs a quantitative descriptive methodology and uses secondary data from the period 2014–2023, obtained from the Palopo City Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Year-End Report publications. The sample period for this study covers 10 years. Economic growth serves as the dependent variable, while inflation, the HDI, and government spending are the independent variables. Data analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS 25 software and multiple regression methods. Classical assumption tests—including normality, multicollinearity, heteroscedasticity, and autocorrelation—were performed. The results show that inflation has no significant effect on economic growth. The HDI has a positive and significant effect, while government spending has a positive but insignificant effect. The adjusted R² value of 0.893 indicates that these three variables explain a large proportion of the variation in economic growth. This study highlights that improving the quality of human resources—through purchasing power, health, and education—has a greater impact on economic growth in Palopo City than either increasing government spending or controlling inflation. The findings provide theoretical support for endogenous growth theory, which emphasizes human resources as a key factor in long-term economic growth. To promote sustainable and equitable development, this study recommends that local governments prioritize policies aimed at improving the quality of human resources and ensure the effective and transparent allocation of public funds.

This concept cannot yet be a universal measure of human development. The Islamic human development index (I-HDI) is here to offer a concept for measuring human development based on maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah. The research aims to analyze economic growth in mediating the influence of government spending on the education, health, and social sectors, open unemployment, and consumption patterns on I-HDI and HDI. The research results of government spending on the education, health, and social sectors as well as consumption patterns is positive and significant, while economic growth and the Open Unemployment Rate (TPT) have a positive but not significant effect on I-HDI. Meanwhile, government spending on the health sector, social sector, and consumption patterns have a positive and significant effect, government spending on the education sector has a negative and insignificant effect, and economic growth and TPT have a positive and insignificant effect on HDI. The magnitude of the direct influence on IHDI is 53.04 percent and on HDI is 59.71 percent. Economic growth as an intervening variable is unable to mediate the influence of government spending on the education sector, government spending on the health sector, government spending on the social sector, TPT, and consumption on I-HDI and HDI.

  • Apr 26, 2025
  • ABUAD Journal of Social and Management Sciences
  • Emmanuel Umale Abbah + 3 more

Using the Vector Error Correction Methodology, this research examined the interactive nature of insecurity on the relationship between government spending on human capital development and economic growth in Nigeria from 1992 to 2022. The study revealed that in the long run, recurrent government spending on education and health positively and significantly influenced economic growth. The interactive variable (insecurity and recurrent government spending on education and health) in the long run negatively and significantly affected economic growth in Nigeria. Furthermore, the variance decomposition result revealed that in the short run, recurrent government spending on education and health caused significant variations in economic growth, followed by insecurity and then the interactive variable (insecurity and recurrent government spending on education and health). However, in the long run, the interactive variable (insecurity and recurrent government spending on education and health) has a more significant influence on economic growth, followed by insecurity and lastly, recurrent government spending on education and health. Thus, the study recommended that the government should increase spending on human capital development, especially recurrent government spending on education and health. Furthermore, increased government spending on the country's security apparatus is also advocated.

Impact of Economic Growth and Quality of Human Resources on Unemployment: Central Sulawesi Case Study 2016-2020
  • Mar 19, 2024
  • International Journal of Social Science and Business
  • Laendatu Paembonan + 2 more

This study aims to determine the effect of economic growth and the quality of human resources on the open unemployment rate in Central Sulawesi Province. The use of panel data regression is essential to find the magnitude of the influence of economic growth variables and the quality of human resources on the open unemployment rate in Central Sulawesi Province to be used as a basis for analysis. The results showed that high economic growth and the increase in the Human Development Index (HDI) in Central Sulawesi Province have not reduced the open unemployment rate in Central Sulawesi Province. Based on the results of regression panel data, this condition shows that economic growth has a positive but insignificant effect on unemployment because the classification of mining and quarrying business fields still supports economic growth. The quality of human resources (H.R.) has a negative but not significant effect on the open unemployment rate in Central Sulawesi in the 2010-2020 period because the improvement in the quality of human resources has not been evenly distributed in areas in Central Sulawesi Province, especially in the regions that rely on mining and quarrying activities that receive more workers from outside Central Sulawesi Province. This research still needs to be continued by considering the variables of wages and working hours in the research model.

Economic growth is a benchmark for analysis of a region's development. So it is necessary to pay attention to the determinants of economic growth. Papua is a case study in this analysis because the level of economic growth is in the high category, in addition to the human development index remaining low in the last ten years. This research aims to analyze the influence of government spending according to function, human development index and investment on economic growth in Papua Province in 2011-2019. The type of data used is panel data from 29 districts/cities for eight years using the panel data regression analysis method. The results of this research show that government spending has different results for each type of government function spending. It was found that education spending and economic spending had no influence on economic growth, but the opposite was true for health spending. Apart from that, the human development and investment index explained through PMTB also has an influence on economic growth. These findings could have implications for the government in deciding policies for allocating government spending, especially for education and economic spending functions, which are still not efficient in stimulating economic growth in the Papua region.
