Abstract

Hypertension is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases and deaths worldwide. The prevalence of hypertension has increased, particularly in low and middle-income countries. The risk factors resulting insuchcases include high sodium intake, low potassium intake, obesity, alcohol consumption, unhealthy physical activities and unhealthy diet.The objective of carrying out this community service activity is to increase the awareness of the elderly about prevention of hypertension and blood pressure control.Leaflet was used as the educational mediain regard tothe hypertension complication prevalence.The implementation of the activity was reinforced by distributing questionnaires regarding the prevention of hypertension complicationsprior to the counseling (pre-test), then the questionnaires were redistributed after the counseling (post-test).This activity was attended by 33 elderly people. The result shows 6 participants (18%) had good knowledge about the prevention of hypertension complications. After the counseling was given, the result shows improvement in the figure, with 24 participants (73%) having proper knowledge about the prevention of hypertension complications.
