Abstract

IntroductionIt is very important to detect and to diagnose hearing impairments at an early age. The sooner special treatments, such as the provision of hearing aids, parent guidance and home-training can start, the less the mental development of the hard-of-hearing child will differ from that of a normal hearing one.For several years in Amsterdam the hearing of all nine-months-old infants has been screened by Ewing's method (1958). After a certain period each infant not reacting to the first screening according to the established standards, is re-examined. The child responding abnormally is sent to the Municipal Audiological Centre. For the audiological examinations of infants one needs a battery of tests. An audiometric technique called Peek-a-Boo-Audiometry has been developed. It offers various ways to test and to condition the child. There is a good agreement between Peek-a-Boo-Audiograms and headphone audiograms taken at a later time.
