The article briefly presents the milestones of the formation of pediatric education and pediatric service in the USSR and the Russian Federation, described the achievements in this direction. It is shown that today there are reserves for improving the health indicators of children and adolescents in the Russian Federation: reduction of infant and child mortality, reduction of morbidity and disability. The achievement of these goals is possible subject to overcoming a number of serious problems that have been preserved in pediatric education. The main ones are a low level of knowledge of applicants entering medical universities; the decline in the quality of education coupled with an increase of students in groups, and the lack of practical skills training for students; the lack of own clinical facilities of the most of the universities and their insufficient provision with the officially approved educational literature of high quality; the decline in the prestige of the university teacher profession and motivational incentives installed incorrectly to improve the quality of teaching; low scholarships for residents and graduate students.
