Abstract

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently completed an analysis of pedestrian fatalities where only a single motor vehicle had been involved. The work looked at the range of causes for pedestrian fatalities. Findings provide insight into the design of crash prevention and pedestrian safety programs. The study concludes there is not just one strategy that will reduce pedestrian fatalities. Instead, a comprehensive approach is needed that relies on engineering, education, and enforcement for both the driver and pedestrian.
