A narrative review of student research projects in United States pharmacy curricula

Background: This study explored existing literature on student research projects in United States pharmacy curricula. Methods: In August 2023, searches were conducted in two databases, PubMed and Embase, followed by pharmacy education journals and Google Scholar. Articles were reviewed by two researchers and included if they described or evaluated pharmacy student research projects between 2010 and 2023. Results: Ten articles representing data from six schools were included. Students from most schools had the option to work individually or in groups. The timing of projects in the curriculum varied, with most students working on them from years three through four, though other schools began their projects earlier in the curriculum. Many students presented or published their projects. Conclusion: The similarities and differences for student pharmacist research projects in the United States may affect pharmacy education as colleges of pharmacy review their curricula and determine whether they should also incorporate or revise a research project component in their programmes. Future evaluation may include a systematic review as more literature on student pharmacist research projects becomes available.

A Talent Cultivation Model for Improving the Innovation Ability of College Students in Scientific Research

The innovation ability of college students in scientific research is constrained by multiple factors. What is worse, the current talent training model in colleges faces many defects. To solve these problems, this paper aims to develop a talent cultivation model that effectively enhances the innovation ability of college students in scientific research. Firstly, the problems with the current talent cultivation model were analyzed, and then the evaluation indicator system was improved for the innovation ability of college students in scientific research. Next, entropy weight method and gray system theory were integrated to create an evaluation model that quantifies the innovation ability of college students in scientific research. On this basis, several strategies were put forward to improve the said ability. The research results help to effectively enhance the innovation ability of college students in scientific research, and optimize the talent cultivation model in colleges and universities.

A Classroom-Based Distributed Workflow Initiative for the Early Involvement of Undergraduate Students in Scientific Research

Engaging freshman and sophomore students in meaningful scientific research is challenging because of their developing skill set and their necessary time commitments to regular classwork. A project called the Chondrule Analysis Project was initiated to engage first- and second-year students in an initial research experience and also accomplish several scientific objectives. Students take part in a classroom-based, distributed workflow project that aims to produce high-quality data on the physical dimensions of chondrules, mm-sized spherules contained in primitive meteorites called chondrites. Such data are needed to test astrophysical models for processes acting in the early solar system. Student investigators process X-ray microtomography data with resources contained on portable USB flash drives distributed to them. Students are exposed to data collection, data quality evaluation, interpretation, and presentation of their results. Herein, an introduction to the scientific objectives is given along with an evolutionary history of the project. A description of the current implementation of the course is presented, and future directions are discussed. Anonymous student evaluations of the course are used to demonstrate the educational and engaging nature of the project. Finally, we reflect on the possible benefits of such a project for first- and second-year students within STEM disciplines.

Construction and analysis of evaluation model for medical students' innovation competency based on research-oriented biochemistry and molecular biology course in China.

Presently, a variety of policies and measures has implemented to enhance the scientific research and innovation ability of medical students, but in the process of practice, there are many problems, such as they lack of independent topic selection ability, weak scientific research skills, lack of autonomous learning ability, the research results are simple and ineffective, limited teacher guidance time and so on. This paper attempted to build an effective model for the promotion of medical students' scientific research and innovation ability, in order to establish an efficacy evaluation model of the "Medical students' Innovative Scientific Research Program." Undergraduates, graduate assistants, and tutors were interviewed with the Behavioral Event Interview technique, and a questionnaire of efficacy evaluation characteristics concluded from the interviews was formed. The questionnaire was conducted on medical students in the Medical students' Innovative Scientific Research Program, and the constructed model was analyzed using reliability analysis, validity analysis, and variation analysis. At the same time, the experimental teaching models are summarized and combed, and compared with other methods such as independent sample test. The results show the model could effectively evaluate the efficacy of the Medical students' Innovative Scientific Research Program and its teaching model is effective in cultivating medical students' learning and scientific research ability. It can provide theoretical support and practical reference for the evaluation and reform of the teaching modes related to the cultivation of scientific and innovative ability of medical students.

Learning geography by combining fieldwork with GIS

Geographic information systems (GIS) offer many possibilities for supporting student research projects. This paper deals with the results of the first phase of a design study on student research projects that combine (quantitative) data collection in the field with data visualisation, manipulation and analysis in GIS. In this study, we try to identify the characteristics of a successful design. In the first phase of the study, four student research projects that combine fieldwork with GIS were designed and tested. The design and test rounds were primarily focused at identifying the characteristics of feasible and potentially rich student research projects. On the basis of the design and test rounds, we identified five features of feasible student research projects that combine fieldwork with GIS.

Evaluation of the Undergraduate Pharmacy Student Research Projects in Ambo University, Ethiopia: Retrospective Review

BackgroundAcademic research is an essential part of undergraduate Pharmacy education to produce qualified Pharmacists. However, there are no documented studies that examine the nature of undergraduate Pharmacy students’ research projects in Ethiopia. Therefore this study aimed to characterize the nature of students’ research project conducted for a bachelor of Pharmacy degree program at Ambo University, Ethiopia.MethodsA cross-sectional, retrospective review using data extraction form was conducted on 279 research reports of undergraduate Pharmacy students at Ambo University from 2013/14 to 2018/2019. The National Harmonized Modular Curriculum program for the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree in Ethiopia was used as a framework to group research projects by research topics and domains. Students’ profile (gender, program), supervisors profile, research types and topics, a domain of pharmacy curriculum, study setting, study design, target population, data collection strategy and techniques, and therapeutic classes of medicines for each project were extracted to see the characteristics of students’ research project. Data were entered and analyzed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS version 25. Descriptive statistics were used to present the data.ResultsFrom 279 Pharmacy undergraduate students’ research projects, 83.9% were conducted by male students and 64.1% were by regular program students. Two hundred fifty (89.6%) of the projects were surveys. Slightly less than half (49.8%) of the research projects were clinical researches. One hundred twenty-six (45.2%) of the research projects were focused on the pharmaceutical care domain followed by dispensing (22.6%) and research and education domain (10%). Out of the 250 survey research projects, the majority 226 (90.4%) of them were used cross-sectional study design, 205 (82%) were conducted at hospitals and 187 (74.8%) were done on the clinical population.ConclusionThe study showed that the majority of the abstracted projects were surveyed type quantitative clinical researches focused on the Pharmaceutical care domain and takes place at hospitals affiliated with the University. On the contrary, a lower proportion of the research projects were laboratory-based researches, focused on Pharmaceuticals manufacturing, drug information service, regulation, and supply chain management domains, and takes place at community Pharmacy and educational institutions. Thus, it is highly recommended the University has to devise a system for expansion of the study settings other than its affiliated hospitals, and the research topics would encompass all areas and domains of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutical sciences.

Early introduction of African medical students into scientific research: a viewpoint and literature review of the importance, barriers, and proposed solutions

The involvement of medical students in scientific research has been advocated recently in medical education. With the voices calling for evidence-based practice, scientific research skills emerge as a critical factor in preparing future generations of physician-scientists. However, Africa is a developing continent with limited financial resources, economic problems, conflicts, and political instabilities that slow the developments in medical education. The involvement of medical students of Africa in scientific research has taken a new shape recently with the formulation of student interest groups, collaboration based on personal communications, and non-governmental research societies. The present review highlights the importance, challenges, and solutions to involve African medical students in scientific research.

The involvement of medical students in scientific research has been widely advocated over the last decades in order to fulfill the need for a new generation of physicians who can apply evidence-based medicine. Efforts to involve medical students in scientific research have been described by individual institutions. In developing countries, students are less involved in research owing to the limited time and resources. Hereby, we describe our three-year experience with a novel model for medical student research in Egypt.

Dealing with Ethical Aspects in Student Research Projects - Results of a Survey of Health Sciences Faculties in Germany

Research projects in the health sciences often involve ethically sensitive areas. The rise in the number of empirically oriented theses and concepts such as research-based learning has led to an increasing need for ethics approvals also for student research projects. There is no standardised procedure for dealing with student research projects in Germany. This can lead to research projects being carried out without an ethics approval, even though this might have been necessary. This study aims to investigate how different universities deal with ethical aspects in students' research. In addition, we present examples of existing approaches. An online-based questionnaire was sent to 132 departments offering degree programmes in public health, health and nursing science, and psychology at 112 universities. Additionally, telephone interviews were conducted with the coordinators of four such degree programmes. Coordinators of 55 such degree programmes participated in the survey; 84% of the participating of these offered support to students with ethical questions concerning their research. However, only 39% provided a structured procedure for dealing with ethical assessments of research projects led by students. Several approaches were presented in depth by the coordinators of four degree programmes, among them the use of checklists, the establishment of internal ethics committees, and ethics advisory services. All respondents agreed on a need to deal with ethics approvals related to students' research projects. Structured procedures exist at some but not all degree programmes, faculties, and universities. Some of these procedures can serve as models for other universities.

In Business Processes, activities are frequently executed using both physical (e.g., machines, employees) or virtual resources. Most resource allocation procedures in BPMS choose randomly a resource which satisfies a given role. In a company a role can be occupied by more then one resource, resulting that a selection-algorithm must be used to decide which resource executes a given activity. Choosing the optimal resource is not always easy and the best possible selection can be achieved if all resource attributes like education, training data and past execution data are factored in. If not all of the data is factored in, the probability of not finding the optimal resource is increasing and suboptimal results are achieved. This student research project presents an approach for the optimization of resource allocation in business processes. It explores both the concepts and their prototypical implementation. Business Processes are composed of business activities which can be executed parallel or sequential. They receive input data and turn it into output data which should bring benefit to the customer, supplier or the company itself. Input data in the student research project are resources. Resources are implemented as staff and machines. The optimal resource-allocation of staff or machines along multiple dimensions like time, costs or success rates can positive influence business processes. This student research project implements a resource manager which finds the best available resource, under consideration of several optimization parameters, in a company. To achieve this goal, several resource allocation procedures are analysed and a model-based procedure is presented which builds regression trees from the resource attributes. The regression trees can predict which resource will perform best a given activity. One algorithm which can build regression trees and is also being used in the student research project is the M5P algorithm. The M5P algorithm has the advantage over the normal regression being able to handle non linear data. On the basis of a typical business process where resources are freely distributed, several optimization scenarios are analysed and compared how the model-based algorithm behaves compared to the standard algorithm in BPMS. At the end, expandability possibilities are discussed which can further improve the quality and the effectiveness of the resource manager.

The online declaration system of university student's scientific research project has avoided the waste on traditional manpower and resource, improved interaction between teachers and classmates. Its status will be more and more important with the enthusiasm which students participate in the scientific research. This paper presents the design and realization of an online declaration system in detail. The system realizes the transmission of the important data in the backstage through Ajax and the fast updating of page content. Adopting the technology of web service, the online declaration system realizes the verification of students' identity. This system has finished the evaluation of the ability grade of student's scientific research and it realizes the sharing of data and the interaction of the heterogeneous platform.

Training of pharmaceutical production technologists through scientific research

The article considered the approach to training pharmaceutical production technologists through scientific research. Successful learning through scientific research requires not only theoretical knowledge, but also practical experience. Involving students in research and projects allows them not only to gain valuable experience, but also to learn how to work in a team, develop critical thinking and solve problems. In addition, active participation in research projects can lead to publications that can be an excellent start for a future career in science. Learning through scientific research allows students to better understand theoretical concepts, as well as to gain practical skills that can be applied in future professional growth. The article considers some features and tools for the early involvement of students in scientific research through the training of project activities, including the choice of topic, task setting, research methods and analysis of results. Specific steps were also proposed to introduce this approach into the educational process, including the organization of students' research work. The importance of involving undergraduate students in publication activity was considered. It should be noted that the approach of learning through scientific research is one of the most effective methods of training specialists, which allows them not only to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills, but also to gain valuable scientific experience that can be used in their future careers.
