Abstract
In this paper we have developed a technique for mutual coupling compensation in planar arrays, that was originally formulated for linear arrays. The technique has been extended to small planar arrays and a novel way of calculating the coupling matrix has been sought. The results presented demonstrate the validity of the method and how significant reductions in the sidelobe levels of a planar array can be achieved. Further, the results demonstrate the usefulness of small planar phased arrays, where previously mutual coupling has precluded the synthesis of high quality radiation patterns.
