Abstract

The age- and sex-specific risk for female patients from a full-mouth dental radiographic examination has been estimated, using a modification of the ICRP effective dose equivalent and organ doses from a Monte Carlo program simulating radiation transport in human anatomy. Risk is expressed as an equivalent whole-body radiation dose of 31 to 446 μSv, or the probability of fatal cancer or of mutation expressed in the first two postirradiation generations of 0.2 to 7 effects per million examinations, depending on the age of the patient and radiographic technique.
