Abstract

The practice of pathology is rapidly changing. Advances in science, progress in therapeutics and novel technological applications create both new opportunities and new challenges for pathologists. Economic realities drive new practice models and encourage attention to quality and integration of care delivery. The trainees of today must be well versed in the science, skilled in the applications, and grounded in the economics in order to transition into practice. How are we approaching our task and how well are we doing? In the United States, the shift to an outcomes or competency-based model is well underway. Multiple surveys are charting our progress. Overall, both recent trainees and their employers report numerous positive outcomes for training but also raise serious concerns which must be addressed. What are the implications for training and how might training change to meet the new reality?
