Abstract

Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn [Thanatephorus cucumeris (Frank) Donk] causes a number of patch diseases. These include Rhizoctonia bare patch of cereals and other crops (R. solani AG 8), crater disease of cereals (Deacon and Scott, 1985; Smith and Wehner, 1986, 1988; Opperman and Barnard 1992; AG unknown), patch of tulips (AG 2-1-tulip; see Chapter V.4) and several turf patches (AG 1-1A, AG 2-2; Green et al., 1994; Zarlengo et al., 1994; Burpee, 1995). Of these, Rhizoctonia bare patch will be used as a model for the study of patch dynamics.
