Abstract

In this work, electrochemical measurements are applied with the aim to obtain detailed information about diethylene triamine (DETA) influence on corrosion of carbon steel in Ethanol-Gasoline Blends (EGB). High corrosion inhibition efficiency of DETA in both E60 and E85 fuels is documented. Significant increase of the inhibitive effect with exposure time suggests steel passivation effect triggered by DETA in EGB. Main factors which facilitate passivation are alkalization resulting from DETA protonation, DETA+ cations bonding of chloride ions in ion pairs and high concentration of dissolved oxygen in EGB. Electrochemical tests show that alkalization has only negligible effect on cathodic process and main cathodic reaction is dissolved oxygen reduction. It is also illustrated that electrochemical measurements can help assess chemical changes in EGB environment due to polarization.
