Abstract
Abstract A method is described for corrosion and electrochemical measurement in thin phase layers of electrolytes, as applicable to the problem of atmospheric corrosion of metals. Results obtained on the behaviour of stainless steels in acid sulphate solutions within the activepassive region of the anodic polarisation curve and on the passivation of the steels in thin layer and in bulk solutions are reported. Selfpassivation of the stainless steels is observed in thin layers of acid sulphate solutions. It is shown that the corrosion resistance of the steels in atmospheres polluted with sulphur dioxide may be predicted from the results of electrochemical measurements in thin phase layers of acid sulphate solutions.
