Abstract
Composites of chayotextle starch (ChS), cellulose (C), cellulose nanoparticles (CN), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) were cast and characterized in physicochemical, mechanical, barrier, and morphological studies. Low mechanical property values were observed in ChS composites. In general, the mechanical properties were improved with increased PVOH concentration and with the addition of C or CN. With increased C or CN concentrations in the composite, the melting temperature increased (137.5 to 174°C for increase from 0.8 to 1.2% C), and the melting enthalpy value decreased (12.5 to 3.3 J/g for increase from 0.8 to 1.2% CN). Microphotography revealed that lower concentrations of C or CN improved the ChS and PVOH distribution in the composites. The water vapor permeability (WVP) of the composite decreased in relation to that of control samples with the addition of C and CN. These studies demonstrate that the mechanical, barrier, and functional properties of chayotextle starch composites can be modified with the addition of PVOH, C, or CN.
