Abstract

This chapter is a short introduction to the concept of leadership in entrepreneurial teams as explored in the context of the Team Academy programmes. The following questions are discussed: In the specific context of Team Academy, what are we talking about when saying “leadership”? How is leadership “learned” in the Team Academy? Is there a particular “character” of leadership as observed in Team Academy teams? If such specificity of leadership in Team Academy exists, to what extent is it shaped by the specific context in which leadership occurs? This chapter suggests we must first find a common understanding of leadership before any further discussion takes place. It is proposed leadership is viewed as a collective process which is dynamic, emergent, and shaped in interaction between all its participants. To support such a view, various theories of collective leadership are presented and briefly discussed with particular attention given to placing them in the context of Team Academy programmes. The key observations are shared together with a number of leadership-related learning outcomes.
