Abstract

Abstract Earlier this century a parole system was widely used in psychiatric hospitals. Now the system has almost disappeared from adult general psychiatric units. In forensic psychiatric units a parole system is still widespread although it appears to be declining. In 1967 a parole system was first introduced into British prisons and it continues today. Many health workers and patients in psychiatric hospitals now believe that the word ‘parole’ has a penal connotation. Maybe it would be better if this term was abolished from the language of psychiatric units. A preferred alternative is ‘leave’.
