Abstract

Divorce actions and the concomitant conflict often demand the involvement and input of the Office of the Family Advocate to do a full investigation followed by a report regarding the best interests of the minor child(ren) to be submitted to the court. The present study focuses on the perception and experience of parents who had to attend such investigations at the Office of the Family Advocate. Telephone interviews were conducted in terms of an availability sample with 62 parents who had been divorced for more than a year. Furthermore, 78 parents completed questionnaires at the time of their visit to the Office of the Family Advocate during the period December 2001 to February 2002. Information about aspects such as the standard of service, the importance of certain factors in determining the best interests of the children, and suggestions for the improvement of the system, were obtained from respondents. The results are presented and discussed.
