Abstract

AbstractThe exposure of the eye directly to the environment renders it vulnerable to a number of uncommon infectious diseases caused by parasites. Once anatomical barriers are breached, host defences are often insufficient to prevent the infection from spreading localy. A fast identification and treatment of the involved microorganisms are necessary. Contact lens wear is associated with keratitis caused Acanthamoebae. Parasitic infections may also arise following bloodborne carriage of the microorganism to the eye or adjacent structures.
