Abstract

About four years ago Cummins Engine Company embarked on developing a family of new turbochargers, employing similar design principles which emphasize a minimization of size, weight, number of parts, and manufacturing costs, concomitant with good aerodynamic performance and outstanding reliability. The resulting series of turbochargers is characterized by an extended vaneless diffuser, asymmetrical compressor volute, a simple V-clamp tying the compressor to the turbine, as well as novel features in the bearing and bushing design of these units. This paper describes the analytical studies, design features, and some performance aspects of this new family of turbochargers.
