Abstract

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common disease that can be associated with considerably morbidity (15–20% of cases) and can be life-threatening (2%). The most frequent causes of AP are cholelithiasis and alcohol consumption. The diagnosis is based on the presence of 2 of 3 findings: typical abdominal pain, increased levels of pancreatic enzymes in blood and an imaging test compatible with AP. The classification of AP severity is based on the presence of local and/or systemic complications associated with AP. The disease management is based on vital support measures, follow-up during the first days of hospitalisation, pain relief and treatment of complications.
