Abstract

Our group has previously demonstrated the efficacy of a trial of hypnosis for reducing healthy individuals' ratings of pain using a noxious cold water bath in a laboratory setting. This finding is consistent with other clinical studies that have also revealed significant pain attenuating effects of hypnosis in samples with acute and chronic clinical pain conditions. Despite the growing evidence base attesting to the hypoalgesic effects of hypnosis, potential psychosocial mechanisms explaining how hypnosis exerts its effects have received little attention.
