Abstract

Awareness of the high prevalence of pain and comorbid emotional and cognitive disorders among military personnel returning from OEF and OIF has been growing. For example, Clark et al. (2008) found that 58% of 114 VA OEF and OIF medical care registrants reported an active mental health problem. However, one major limitation of previous studies is that they present only cross-sectional, self-reported symptom data rather than clinically-confirmed, longitudinal diagnostic data. Furthermore, few have examined the overlap between pain conditions and substantiated cognitive and emotional problems.
