Abstract

The species Sotalia fluviatilis is little known in the Amazon region, especially in the state of Amapa, where few studies have been conducted. The present study is a contribution to the knowledge on the behavioral pattern and perception of boatmen on S. fluviatilis in Port of Acai. The study was carried out in a fixed location at Port of Acai. The observations were conducted monthly from July 2013 to December 2013 in the morning, along with interviews with boatmen, when a survey was applied as well as an Informed Consent Form – ICF. The behavioral patterns of S. fluviatilis most frequently observed were slow movement, fast movement, and foraging. When inquired about S. fluviatilis , most boatmen reported frequently seeing animals foraging around the port in groups of two or three, most often during the high tide, supporting in loco observations. According to boatmen, S. fluviatilis , when observed, is near the margins of the river, and that the presence of this species is associated to the food discarded by local fish vendors. They also described sighting fewer animals compared to five years ago. Therefore, the present study aims at providing information on the areas of occurrence of S. fluviatilis that could assist in conservation actions of this species, given the imminent construction of a nearby port for transporting soy. Keywords: Popular knowledge; Ethology; northern region; cetaceans.
