Abstract

A mere six years since its inception, PACT – The Professional Association of Canadian Theatres – is a very important success. Open to all professional, non-profit theatres in Canada, it has more than doubled its membership, which now stands at 83 theatres. The successor to the 33-member League of Canadian Theatres, PACT was born with a double mandate that recognized the need for a national body that could speak from a position of solidarity. Charged to bargain with groups such as Canadian Actor’s Equity and to lobby with government agencies to elevate the position and profile of theatre in Canada, PACT was also issued a hidden challenge: show immediate dexterity, or die.
