Abstract

While addictive drugs share dopaminergic brain targets, morphological differences between psychostimulant and opiate addiction remain unresolved. Opiate use impacts cue-extinction [via ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC)] and nucleus accumbens (NAcc) neuroplasticity in rodents, while psychostimulants accompany increased impulsivity [via inferior frontal gyrus (IFG)] in rodents and humans. We hypothesized parallel gray matter volume (GMV) changes in individuals with cocaine or heroin use disorder (CUD/HUD): decreased NAcc/vmPFC GMV in HUD and IFG in CUD.
