Abstract

Introduction: This investigation shows ultrasonografhic results of intra-abdominal esophageal segment, gastroesophageal junction and esophageal hiatus in children, without esophageal disease, defining normality in order to distinguish its abnormalities. Methods: We selected 134 children, 78 (58%) male and 56 (42%) female, clasified as less than one year old, from one to five years old and from six to twelve years old. For the stadistic analysis it was employed the statistical function known as Desvest Results: The esophageal hiatus in longitudinal view in <1 year X= 9.21 mm +/− 2.14 SD, 1–5 years X= 11.33 mm +/− 2.75 SD and 6–12 years X= 11.77 mm +/− 3.86 SD. In transverse view, <1 year X= 10.47 mm +/− 2.14 SD, 1–5 years X= 11.93 +/−2.47 SD and 6–12 years X= 12.66 +/− 3.6 SD. The gastroesophageal junction in the longitudinal view in <1 year X= 8.73 ×11.38 mm +/− 1.9 ×2.4 SD; 1–5 years X= 11.21 ×13.41 mm +/−2.5 ×2.75 SD and 6–12 years X= 10.65 ×13.49 +/− 3.27 ×3.86 SD. The esophageal wall at the level of hiatus in longitudinal view showed similar values for all groups X= 3.13 mm +/− 1.04 SD. At the transverse view X= 2.93 +/− 0.78 SD in <1 year, 1–5 years X= 3.19 mm +/− 0.93 SD and 6–12 years X= 3.21 +/− 0.94 SD. The intraabdominal esophageal segment in longitudinal view for the first group X= 12.95 +/− 3.9 SD, for the second group X= 17.3 mm +/− 4.9 SD. , and for the third group X= 17.37 mm +/− 5 .0 SD. Conclusion: Ultrasonography is useful in evaluation and measurements of the structures contained in the intraabdominal segment of esophagus, and we recommend it as diagnostic complement of first line in the detection and study of specific diseases of this segment.
