Abstract
Combination fluoropyrimidine with platinum-based chemotherapy has become the standard of care for advanced gastric and gastroesophageal cancer. Clinical trials in conjunction with practice, have adopted induction fluoropyrimidine and platinum-based chemotherapy for 3-4 months. In other GI malignancies, induction chemotherapy followed by maintenance chemotherapy has been shown to improve patient outcomes compared to observation, with a decrease in treatment-related toxicities with induction therapy.
