Abstract

AbstractWe demonstrated a non‐rubbing liquid crystal alignment method utilizing an inkjet printed polyimide (PI) layer for liquid crystal displays using flexible substrates. A uniform LC alignment on the plastic substrates was achieved by a two‐step inkjet printing method; first by the PI printing and followed by the empty cartridge printing. The disparity in electro‐optical performance for the twisted nematic (TN) cell with inkjet printed PI on plastic substrates and the cell with rubbed PI alignment layers is negligible.
