Abstract

The cover picture of this issue is an optical microscopy image of an yttrium-barium-copper oxide surface grown by liquid phase epitaxy. It shows the spiral-growth characteristics and the mosaic-like structure of the film. This issue of physica status solidi (a) also contains Original Papers presented at the XI Latin American Congress of Surface Science and Its Applications (XI CLACSA), Pucon, Chile, 7–12 December 2003. The Proceedings of this conference are to be continued in phys. stat. sol. (b) 241, No. 10 (2004) and in an online issue of phys. stat. sol. (c) 1, No. S1 (2004). The issue is completed by a number of papers from the Conference on Photo-responsive Materials, Kariega Game Reserve, South Africa, 25–29 February 2004. Full Proceedings of this meeting are published in phys. stat. sol. (c) 1, No. 9 (2004). The plenary presentation by David C. Look on “The future of ZnO light emitters” [2] appears as Editor's Choice.
