The tendency to form renal stones that is a frequent complication of intestinal bypass surgery is caused by an increase in the soluble oxalate pool available for passive colonic absorption. Oxalate urolithiasis can be managed by increased vigilance on the part of the surgeon and adherence by the patient to a specific dietary and pharmacologic regimen.
