• The IGF system is the major mediator of both intra-uterine and postnatal growth. • The IGF-I receptor appears to mediate the growth-promoting effects of both IGF-I and IGF-II. • The role of IGF binding proteins in mediating the growth-promoting actions of the IGFs is complex and remains incompletely understood.
