Abstract
sPerforming artists’ medical problems have likely existed for a long time but received attention from healthcare professionals only in recent years. The chapter traces important publications and events in the nineteenth and early twentieth century pertaining to the emergence of performing arts medicine. An overview of the development of performing arts medicine as a field of study along with the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) that was originated in the 1980s is discussed specifically focused on the development of music medicine, dance medicine, and voice medicine. The chapter concludes with a prospect of the field in the twenty-first century and its viability forward.
