Oversharing as topic negotiation in threaded social media discourse: Evidence from Xiaohongshu (Red)

This study examines oversharing, the disclosure of personal or affective information that exceeds contextual expectations, as an interactional practice in social media discourse. Adopting a discourse-pragmatic perspective, this study shifts attention from individual intention to interactional recognition and analyzes how boundary-crossing talk is oriented to and evaluated in comment-thread interactions on Xiaohongshu (Red), a major Chinese platform. Based on 50 conversation threads, the analysis identifies five recurrent types of oversharing: over-solicitation, over-disclosure, over-directive, over-evaluation, and over-interpretation, and explores their distribution and co-occurrence. The findings show that oversharing often stretches or departs from the topical frame established by the original post, creating moments of disalignment but also opportunities for topic and participation renegotiation. Thus, oversharing emerges not only as a source of pragmatic tension but also as a resource for interactional management. The study contributes to understanding how excessive or misaligned sharing shapes interactional trajectories, offering insights into participation management, coherence, and pragmatic challenges in online communication.

The subject of research in this article is the social media discourse. The purpose of the work is to theoretically interpret the social media discourse in the context of modern science and practice of media communications. The study of social media discourse considers the features of the platforms, its production and storage, as well as its representation. Social media users can change their roles from being a consumer to a creator. The work uses a set of methods: comparative analysis, systematization, and interpretative analysis. The research found that the social media discourse is a functionally conditioned type of discourse (integration of personal and institutional types of discourse) that exists in the framework of online communication, and has the synthesis of oral and written speech. The social media discourse consists of media texts that include heterogeneous elements, depending on the combination of which creolized, polycode and multimodal texts are constructed. Such texts differ in the process of creation, organization and features of presentation in social media, communication in which, unlike electronic communication in general, is based on the principle of participation. Taking into account the specific features of distribution platforms used by social media, the authors emphasize that all Internet services related to social media have special characteristics that make it possible to distinguish them from other Internet services, resources that exist in the global network. The definition of the social media discourse allows us to expand the understanding of this category in modern media communications.

Are Norms of Disclosure of Online and Offline Personal Information Associated with the Disclosure of Personal Information Online?

This study investigated whether norms of self-disclosure of one's online and offline identity are linked to online disclosure of personal and intimate information. We expected online disclosure of personal and intimate information to be associated with norms of online disclosure. Secondary analysis of the 2006 Pew and American Life Survey of parents and teens data set was conducted to test the study's hypotheses. A weak relationship emerged between adherence to norms supporting the disclosure of offline and online personal information. Supporting theories of computer-mediated communication, our findings show a strong relationship between adherence to norms of online identity disclosure and the disclosure of personal information online through the posting of personal photos, videos, and an online profile.

Disclosure, HIV, and the Dialectic of Sameness and Difference

Generally a distinction is made between the disclosure of personal information and the disclosure of countertransference feelings to a patient. While this may be a necessary distinction to make in the interest of carrying on a coherent conversation on this question, I argue that there is sort of vanishing point where the difference between “facts” and “feelings” merges. What I wish to suggest here is that, to a certain and necessary degree, the context and the framing of the question of self-disclosure determines what we define as a disclosure. I propose that thinking about a dialectical relationship between sameness and difference is a particularly useful way into the question of self-disclosures in contemporary clinical work. The question of disclosing personal information to patients became a pressing one for me when I found that in some cases if felt necessary to disclose my HIV seropositive status. Here is an example of a fact that is particularly laden with feelings, confounding the distinction between a factual and a countertransferential disclosure. As might be expected in considering the disclosure of personal medical information, I felt there were a variety of reasons to do so, each with a specific context. In a long psychotherapy treatment with an HIV-negative man I found that tracking each of our senses of sameness and difference offered a way of understanding the changing meanings of the disclosure of my HIV seropositivity. But more importantly it became clear that it was the process of disclosure rather than the content that exerted the greatest influence on our work, ultimately contributing to a transformative experience for the patient.

Communicative Strategies of Social Media Discourse

We have attempted to analyse the features of communicative strategies of a media discourse. The paper describes the notions of “discourse”, “media discourse”, “social media discourse”, and “communicative strategies”. The research is performed using the social media texts collected by the authors. Up to date no linguistic investigations of communicative strategies used in social media discourse have been conducted. We have focused on news texts from information, news, educational, and entertaining platforms, in social networks. The most important thing is to identify the ways of communicative strategies generation and the methods of their association in a social media discourse. The article shows some typical features of a social media discourse. The subject of the research is a set of communicative strategies used during implementation of the communicative functions of texts. The purpose of the paper is to identify and organise communicative strategies, the characteristics of their use depending on the social text topic, and to review the impact of such a text. The main aim of the research is to study the social media discourse as one type of an institutional media discourse; to identify and describe the factors impacting its formation.

The inadvertent disclosure of personal health information through peer-to-peer file sharing programs

There has been a consistent concern about the inadvertent disclosure of personal information through peer-to-peer file sharing applications, such as Limewire and Morpheus. Examples of personal health and financial information being exposed have been published. We wanted to estimate the extent to which personal health information (PHI) is being disclosed in this way, and compare that to the extent of disclosure of personal financial information (PFI). After careful review and approval of our protocol by our institutional research ethics board, files were downloaded from peer-to-peer file sharing networks and manually analyzed for the presence of PHI and PFI. The geographic region of the IP addresses was determined, and classified as either USA or Canada. We estimated the proportion of files that contain personal health and financial information for each region. We also estimated the proportion of search terms that return files with personal health and financial information. We ascertained and discuss the ethical issues related to this study. Approximately 0.4% of Canadian IP addresses had PHI, as did 0.5% of US IP addresses. There was more disclosure of financial information, at 1.7% of Canadian IP addresses and 4.7% of US IP addresses. An analysis of search terms used in these file sharing networks showed that a small percentage of the terms would return PHI and PFI files (ie, there are people successfully searching for PFI and PHI on the peer-to-peer file sharing networks). There is a real risk of inadvertent disclosure of PHI through peer-to-peer file sharing networks, although the risk is not as large as for PFI. Anyone keeping PHI on their computers should avoid installing file sharing applications on their computers, or if they have to use such tools, actively manage the risks of inadvertent disclosure of their, their family's, their clients', or patients' PHI.

An Analysis of the Intertextuality of Social Media Discourse of Chuka University Students on WhatsApp Platforms

The earliest forms of the internet were developed in the 1960s whereas the first recognizable social media site was created in 1997. Since then, Social media has greatly influenced the way people communicate with one another and continues to gain popularity owing to the technological milestones made in the world of communication. As people communicate via social media interaction platforms, language naturally and inevitably experiences some changes. Therefore, there was a need to undertake a linguistic study to account for such changes and developments in language use. The main concern of this study was to analyze the university students’ social media discourse. The discourse analyzed sprung from the WhatsApp interaction platform. The WhatsApp groups utilized were those formed by Chuka University students in Tharaka Nithi County, Kenya. Particularly, the following objective guided the study: to demonstrate the intertextuality nature of social media discourse. The study employed a multimodal semiotic approach as the analytic tool. A descriptive research design and the qualitative technique were employed to analyze data. Both Snowball and purposive sampling procedures were used. Snowballing was used to establish the WhatsApp groups that were used by the students, while the purposive sampling procedure was used to selectively collect texts from WhatsApp groups. The texts that were purposively selected were those that demonstrated the intertextuality nature of social media discourse. The rationale for choosing WhatsApp was the fact that there was a paucity of linguistic studies based on this interaction platform despite its popularity. The study findings revealed that social media discourse exhibits intertextuality in which language is dexterously and creatively used. This study sheds light on language usage and its dynamics. It is hoped that it will enrich knowledge on Multimodality and Semiotic Theory.

Consumer concerns over the safety of their personal information and the violation of their privacy rights are described as being the single overwhelming barrier to rapid growth of e-commerce. This paper explores the problems for e-commerce users when there is collection, use, and disclosure of personal information that are based on implied consent in e-commerce transactions. It questions the assumption that consent is sufficient to waive privacy interests in relation to e-commerce transactions. It will argue that consent should not necessarily be sufficient to waive privacy interests, and that the collection, use and/or disclosure of personal information should be subject to regulation.

개인정보자기결정권은 헌법전에 명문으로 규정되지 않았음에도 불구하고 헌법해석에 의해 기본권으로 인정되는 기본권이다. 그리고 개인정보자기결정권이라는 기본권은 정보화시대에 정보주체의 사생활 보호 등 여러 보호영역과의 관련성을 갖는 중요한 기본권이다. 그런데 메르스 사태 이후 현재의 코로나19 상황에 이르기까지 감염병 예방과 전파방지의 과정 속에서 개인정보의 제한과 침해에 대한 숙고와 검토가 필요하다는 것이 자명해졌다. 왜냐하면 실제로 코로나 19에 대한 효과적 대응을 위한 정보공개 시스템 실행의 이면에는 확진환자 개인의 사생활이 여과 없이 공개되는 부작용 발생이 적지 않았기 때문이다. 이미 국가인권위원회도 확진자의 과도한 사생활 노출로 인한 인권침해가 발생하지 않도록 해야 한다고 권고한 바 있다. 이러한 상황에 대한 문제의식을 바탕으로 이 글에서는 개인의 민감정보 등 개인정보 공개와 관련한 개인정보 보호법과 감염병 예방법의 관련 규정들을 상관적으로 검토하였다. 특히 개인정보자기결정권과 관련하여 감염병 예방법상의 정보공개와 관련된 규정인 제34조의2 규정을 중심으로, 확진자의 내밀한 사생활을 보호할 수 있는 세부적이고 합리적인 공개기준의 정립 여부와 특히 위치정보 등의 공개로 인한 권리침해의 문제에 대해 살펴 보았다. 일반적인 개인정보와 구분되는 개인위치정보의 특성을 고려할 때 개인위치정보가 개인정보 보호법상의 민감정보에 해당될 수 있는가, 개인위치정보의 분류에 관하여 온라인행태정보유형으로 생존하는 개인에 관한 정보로써 개인정보 가명가공정보익명가공정보 중 어디에도 해당하지 않는 정보유형으로 새로이 “개인관련정보”를 입안하는 방안의 검토, 감염병 예방법상 개인위치정보를 비롯한 개인정보를 제공하고 공개함으로써 발생될 수 있는 권리침해에 관한 대책과 절차에 대해 검토하였다. 개인정보에 관련된 법제는 그 정보의 보호와 이용이 동시에 고려되어야 할 필요가 있다. 즉 개인정보 관련법제는 ‘개인정보의 유용성 배려’와 ‘개인의 권리이익 보호’의 균형을 맞추는 병존적 구조를 반영한 것이어야 할 것이다. 다만 양법익 간의 관계에 있어서는 ‘개인의 권리이익 보호’가 우선적으로 고려되는 것이어야만 함은 물론이다. 안전사회 추구로 인한 부작용을 간과해서는 안되는 것도, 개인정보의 유통으로 인한 비재산적 손해에 대한 배상책임을 고민해야 하는 것 도 이러한 헌법정신에 기인한다고 하겠다. 감염병 예방법의 새로운 수정이 시작되어야 한다.The right to self-determination of personal information is a basic right recognized as a basic right by constitutional interpretation, even though it was not prescribed in the Constitution. And this right is an important basic right that has relevance to various areas of protection, such as protection of the privacy of the information subject in the information age. However, from the MERS outbreak to the current COVID-19, it has become apparent that it is necessary to consider and review the restrictions and infringements of personal information in the process of preventing infectious diseases and preventing transmission. This is because, in fact, behind the implementation of the information disclosure system for effective response to COVID-19, there were not a few occurrences of side effects in which the personal life of confirmed patients was disclosed without filtering. The National Human Rights Commission of Korea has already recommended that human rights violations should not occur due to excessive exposure of the confirmed person s private life. Based on the awareness of the problem in this situation, in this article, the related regulations of the Personal Information Protection Act and the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act related to the disclosure of personal information, such as personal sensitive information, were reviewed correlatively. In particular, with respect to the right to self-determination of personal information, detailed and reasonable disclosure standards have been established to protect the confidential personal life of the confirmed person, with a focus on Article 34-2, which is a regulation related to the disclosure of information in the Infectious Disease Prevention Act, and, in particular, disclosure of location information, etc., I reviewed the problem of infringement of rights caused by. Considering the characteristics of personal location information that are distinguished from general personal information, can personal location information correspond to sensitive information of the Personal Information Protection Act?, review of a plan to devise a new “personal-related information” as an information type, review measures and procedures for rights infringement that may occur by providing and disclosing personal information including personal location information in the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act. Legal systems related to personal information need to consider the protection and use of the information at the same time. In other words, the legislation related to personal information should reflect the coexistence structure that balances “consideration of the usefulness of personal information” and “protection of individual rights and interests”. However, in the relationship between the two legal interests, ‘protection of individual rights and interests’ should be given priority. It can be said that this constitutional spirit should not overlook the side effects caused by the pursuit of a safe society and the need to consider liability for compensation for non-property damages caused by the distribution of personal information. A new modification of the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act must be initiated.

To Disclose or Not to Disclose: The Ironic Effects of the Disclosure of Personal Information About Ethnically Distinct Newcomers to a Team

Recently, scholars have argued that disclosure of personal information is an effective mechanism for building high-quality relationships. However, personal information can focus attention on differences in demographically diverse teams. In an experiment using 37 undergraduate teams, we examine how sharing personal information by ethnically similar and ethnically distinct newcomers to a team affects team perceptions, performance, and behavior. Our findings indicate that the disclosure of personal information by ethnically distinct newcomers improves team performance. However, the positive impact on team performance comes at a cost to the newcomers, who are perceived as less competent by others and experience heightened social discomfort in team interactions. Ironically, what benefits the ethnically diverse team may undermine its ethnically distinct members. This study highlights how the management of diversity may sometimes require making trade-offs between individual interests and those of the team.

When Crisis Conversations Converge: How Government Messaging and Online Sense‐Making Align During Crises

In modern crises, governments aim to communicate in ways that foster shared understanding, yet public interpretations often diverge, undermining response efforts. Crisis communication now unfolds in hybrid media environments where televised press conferences intersect with real‐time social media discourse. Despite this shift, we lack systematic understanding of when and how government messaging and online discourse align at the informational level. This study examines informational alignment of official crisis communication and social media discourse across six European countries during the first wave of the COVID‐19 pandemic. Drawing on quantitative text analysis of 279 government press conferences and over 409,000 tweets, the study identifies two communicative features of government messages, sentiment and linguistic complexity, and their role in shaping online engagement with government‐framed issues and the degree of overlap between press conferences and social media discourse. The findings underscore the role of message complexity and sentiment in shaping shared sense‐making during crises. This study contributes to crisis communication and public policy scholarship by bridging sender‐and audience‐focused perspectives and offering cross‐national evidence on online engagement in high‐stakes contexts.
